Truck driver pulled to safety after crash, vehicle left hanging on bridge across Ohio River

Louisville, Ky. (AP) – Firefighters Friday pulled the driver of a semi-truck to safety after a crash left the vehicle hanging from a bridge. ohio River.

A three-vehicle crash on the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge connecting Louisville, kentucky The fire was reported in southern Indiana around noon, Louisville Fire Chief Brian O’Neill said during a news conference. Another person involved in the accident was immediately taken to hospital and crews were deployed to rescue the truck driver from the cab.

It took about 40 minutes to set up the rope system and get someone ready to climb into the cab and strap the driver into a safety harness and bring him out to safety, O’Neill said. As a precaution he was taken to the hospital.

“The train runs all the time for these types of things,” he said of the rescue company. “It’s a very bad situation.”

Firefighters were prepared and the operation went smoothly because of their training, he said.

“These were some serious heroes here,” he said. “It was some really professional, well-rehearsed, well-trained stuff. They got there, went straight to him.”

Louisville Metro Police are investigating the crash and said the bridge remained closed in both directions Friday afternoon.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said a safety inspection of the bridge will be conducted after all vehicles are removed.
