TOKYO (Reuters) – Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will visit Japan on April 2-3, where he will meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other officials, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Monday.
Prabowo’s visit to Tokyo will follow his visit to Beijing on Monday to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, the president-elect’s first trip abroad less than two months after winning the race to replace current leader Joko Widodo.
Hayashi told a regular news conference that Japan and Indonesia are comprehensive strategic partners sharing fundamental principles and values and hoped Prabowo’s visit would promote closer bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas.
Japan’s Jiji news agency reported that Prabowo, a former special forces commander and current Defense Minister, also plans to meet Japan’s Defense Minister Minoru Kihara.
In 2021, Prabowo and Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi signed an agreement to facilitate defense equipment transfers in a meeting with their Japanese counterparts, as Japan seeks military and economic cooperation with Southeast Asian countries to counter China. Wants to expand.
