LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will seek a fourth term in office, his party said Wednesday, noting that he will be the consensus candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections and for the post of prime minister.
Sharif, a three-time prime minister, returned to Pakistan in October after four years in self-imposed exile in London to avoid jail on corruption charges.
However, following his return his conviction and sentence were overturned on appeal, making him eligible to run for a seat in the parliament that will elect the new Prime Minister after the February 8 vote.
"There is no doubt about it. Nawaz Sharif is our candidate for the post of prime minister," said senior Sharif party leader Rana Sanaullah Khan.
Sharif's main rival Imran Khan is currently serving a prison sentence, but has also announced plans to contest the elections. Khan was voted out in no-confidence vote In April 2022, but he remains a prominent figure and has a large number of followers in his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
