CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — Officials are collecting reports from Floridians who felt a magnitude 4.0 earthquake off the coast, the National Weather Service reports.

The quake struck shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Earthquake tremors have been felt in Florida before. In September 2006, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico was felt in Florida and other states. In parts of Florida, items fell off shelves during the 2006 earthquake and some Floridians reported seeing waves in their swimming pools, the USGS reports. That earthquake was felt throughout Florida and even several other southern states texasLouisiana, Georgia and the Carolinas.
