MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Czech teenager Linda Noskova reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Australian Open on Monday after Elina Svitolina retired due to a back injury early in the first set.
The Ukrainian, who was in tears, had a medical timeout after trailing 2-0 and was trailing 3-0 when she decided to leave.
“Obviously today was not the day I planned to win,” said the 19-year-old Noskova, who defeated top-ranked Iga Swiatek in the third round. “I feel pity for Alina, I hope she gets well soon.”
The first game of the match lasted for 11 minutes and had 20 points. Noskova broke serve and led 2-0 before Svitolina called a timeout.
When she returned, the Ukrainian player’s serve was broken for the second time. She shook hands with Noskova and left.
