NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gas explosions at an industrial building in Kenya’s capital have killed two people, injured at least 29 others and sent thick smoke billowing above homes, authorities said.
Wesley Kimeto, police chief of the Embakasi area, where the explosions occurred, said one adult and one minor were confirmed dead as of 4:30 a.m. and that the death toll could rise as the day wore on.
Nairobi residents, who took several videos from their phones, were heard speaking in worried tones, some of them screaming.
Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said a company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire broke out and caused extensive damage to the building where the company was located. The fire, which broke out around midnight, was later extinguished but its cause was unknown.
The Kenya Red Cross evacuated 29 injured people, the organization posted on its X social media account.

The proximity to industrial company residences raised questions over the implementation of city plans. County government officials have been accused of taking bribes to ignore building codes and regulations.
