This Los Angeles heist looks like it came from a thriller novel. Thieves stole $30 million in cash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a scene that could have been lifted from the pages of a thriller, thieves broke into a money storage facility building in Los Angeles on Easter Sunday and made off with $30 million in cash.

Now detectives are trying to uncover the brazen cash heist that is reportedly one of the largest on record in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Ellen Morales told Los Angeles Times, who broke the news of the crime, that the thieves were able to break into the building as well as the safe where the money was kept. The operators of the business did not become aware of such a huge theft until the safe was opened on Monday.

Media reports have identified the facility in Sylmar as the location of GardaWorld, a global cash management and security company. Several TV crews were filming outside the facility Thursday morning in an industrial part of Sylmar, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles.

Canada-based GardaWorld did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The LAPD would say Thursday only that the theft is being investigated with the FBI. Representatives for the federal agency did not respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
