New York police officer shot dead during traffic stop

New York (AP) – A New York A city police officer was shot dead during a traffic stop on Monday, the city’s mayor said.

“We lost one of our sons today and it is extremely painful. “It’s extremely painful,” Mayor Eric Adams told reporters at a hospital in Queens.

The shooting happened in the Far Rockaway section of Queens just before 5:50 p.m., police said. The officer was shot under his bullet-resistant vest as he approached the vehicle.

Officers returned fire and injured a person in the vehicle.

The injured officer was taken to an area hospital but could not be saved, officials said.
