BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — There were laughs and hugs among Hollywood’s best actors — including Margot Robbie, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio — during a celebratory ceremony where everyone picked a winner at the American Film Institute Awards on Friday. Said goodbye.
The annual invitational luncheon honored 10 films and 10 television shows, with well-spoken words about each famous project followed by a brief clip of a scene.
“Welcome to the annual AFI group hug,” said institute president Bob Gazale, as many in the audience laughed. “For those who are new to this humble matter, the answer is ‘no’. … No.’ You are not going to lose. There is no losing here.”
Most of the people in the Beverly Hills ballroom appeared to be in happy mood, with smiles and long conversations.
Robbie chatted briefly with “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan, who eventually got the nod from Robbie’s “Barbie” castmate America Ferrera. “Maestro” stars Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan enjoyed their time together on the red carpet, while “Beef” star Ali Wong met up with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

“American Fiction” stars Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown joins “Jury Duty” star James Marsden and former BET CEO Debra L. Met with Lee. Director Steven Spielberg takes photos with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig.
AFI events are all about having fun, creating a relaxed atmosphere with no pressure.
“When we started this program, 20 years ago now, the idea was simple: We tell you you are great and why,” Gazelle said. “We share a moment from your movie or television program. …This community is not competitive. It’s never a competition. I know this doesn’t seem ideal. But this is what we are.”
Honored films included “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “May in December,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things” and “Spider ” Are included. -Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Recognized television shows were “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Beef,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Poker Face,” “Reservation Dogs” and “Succession.”
Others in the star-studded room included Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Aniston, Robert Downey Jr., Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Lily Gladstone, Ayo Adebiri and Tracee Ellis Ross.
Ellen Burstyn concluded the luncheon with a blessing celebrating the honorees, whom she admired.
“I feel blessed to be a part of this amazing tribe,” said the 91-year-old Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award winner. You all.”
