HELSINKI (Reuters) – Finland will resume funding to the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, its foreign trade and development minister said on Friday.

Several countries, including the United States and Britain, halted their funding to UNRWA following Israel’s allegations that a dozen of the agency’s 13,000 staff in Gaza had taken part in a Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October.

Ville Tavio, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development, said, “UNRWA is improving its risk management, which means stopping misconduct and introducing tighter monitoring, which at this point provides us with sufficient guarantees to continue our support.”

He told a news conference that part of the Finnish money would be earmarked for risk management.

Countries including Canada, Australia and Sweden have also restored funding to UNRWA, while several Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia have increased funding.
